Southwestern Law鈥檚 Parris Academy Showcases Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, and Mediation Mastery

LOS ANGELES, CA 鈥擨n the spirit of National Mediation Week, 黑人探花鈥檚 Parris Academy for Excellence in Law & Leadership hosted a program highlighting the vital role of civility and professionalism in the legal profession.

The session featured trial attorney Rob Parris and JAMS mediator Donna Melby. Drawing from her experience as a senior partner in an AmLaw 100 law firm, Melby shared the 鈥淭hree C鈥檚鈥 that defined her leadership style: Coordination, Cooperation, and Communication. 鈥淭hese values aren鈥檛 optional鈥攖hey are everything,鈥 said Melby. 鈥淲ithout them, even the strongest case can fall apart. With them, your team becomes unstoppable.鈥

The speakers emphasized that emotional intelligence lies at the heart of effective leadership. They discussed how patience, a calm demeanor, and clarity of purpose are critical for managing teams, engaging clients, and working constructively with opposing counsel鈥攅specially under pressure. Parris emphasized that understanding your client鈥檚 BATNA鈥擝est Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement鈥攊s a key to a successful mediation strategy. He encouraged future lawyers to prepare thoughtfully and consider solutions beyond monetary terms, like apologies, career advising services, or other creative solutions. 鈥淩esolution,鈥 they agreed, 鈥渞equires imagination as much as negotiation.鈥

Both speakers championed authenticity as a defining trait of strong leadership. Quoting Ken Cloke鈥檚 The Mediator as Leader, they reminded students that 鈥渂ecoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself.鈥 Authenticity is a source of strength and credibility in the courtroom or the mediation room.

Perhaps most striking was the camaraderie between Melby and Parris鈥攐nce fierce courtroom opponents and now close friends and professional allies. Their relationship illustrates a key message: strong, respectful relationships can endure long after a case has ended and often become the most rewarding aspect of a legal career.

This program was part of the Parris Academy鈥檚 ongoing mission to provide students with the legal tools they need to succeed and the wisdom, humanity, and professionalism that define excellence in the legal profession.
